Rod Serling spent most of his youth in a sleepy New York State town called Binghamton. He ended up in television, that titanic culture-changer, at its very inception, and went on to create “The Twilight Zone”, writing many episodes. This show essentially mainstreamed science fiction for Middle America, taking it out of the B-movie houses and grimy paperback stands and into after-dinner hour with the family. Horror fans also have to tip their hat to Serling. He died at the absurdly young age of 50 from a heart attack brought on by a 4-pack-a-day smoking habit, stress, and rage at the injustices of his profession, his country, his world. A great man.

A great woman, Tara Tainton, near the beginning of her own amazing performance career, embarked on a pretty massive and ambitious homage to the Zone that included sci-fi elements and, if this first episode is any guide, moral lessons learned the hard way. Yeah, the really hard way. :)

Probably shot 7 or 8 years ago (?), Episode 1, “Your Wish Is My Command” (nice title), will be a little shocking to new Taintonites. We get a fancy intro (love that diary graphic, OMG!), we get F/X, we get a moody synth score, we get a lot more hand-held camera-work than we’re used to. Today, TT has stripped her work to its essentials, rather like Michelangelo who didn’t see much point in sculpting toes and kneecaps; his Madonnas and St. Peters rose like obscure figures from unfinished bases, straight out of the marble. Similarly, Tara now likes to keep the focus entirely on her, creating one-on-one, almost meditative erotic experiences.

But in her apprenticeship, she’s fucking around with the tools at her disposal and having a ball. We have a ball, too. The joys of encountering apprentice-work from a great artist are enjoying the artist’s creative exuberance at the dawn of their powers, and also pinpointing the traits that would mature into her defining greatness.

Two of those traits: an irresistible sexiness and an irresistible intelligence. Those lucky enough to have encountered this clip back in 07 or 08 or whenever (original dates on vids would be awesome for Taintonologists, Tara) would have seen that there was something different, something *better* about this girl. Daring to tell a story. Daring to be funny.

Daring to use her brains, while she was at it. Tara offers us contrasting male fantasies: the brainless housemaid and the dominatrix. Each are sexy in their own way. “We”, the dumb male “hero” in the tale, inadvertently trigger the “fuck-me-harder” program in the Tara-Bot: the result is an eternity of punishment from a dominatrix for whom we can’t find the ctrl-alt-delete button. Yep, time to cue that Zone music. When fantasies become real, we can no longer control them — they take on a life of their own. Mr. Serling would have approved this submission.

Meanwhile, the feminist subtext will probably slip by most viewers … but not this old scholar, nuh uh. :)

Oh, it should be noted that Tara is incredibly sexy throughout, especially as the dom (of course).
