Rarely does reading a simple scientific fact tickle me to the core so much. Or motivate me like a call to action and make me want to get up and take advantage of the wonders of my female body. But maybe I'm getting too technical about this. Forget the facts, the research, and the formal science of it all. Let's celebrate the fact that we ALL have sexy bedroom voices! Once again, my subscription to Women's Health magazine surprises me with a sexy fact unknown to me. And I do love to learn! ...especially when it comes to sex. In the September 2008 issue's Sex Report section, I found this juicy little tidbit about that ambiguous phenomenon known as "the sexy voice." We all want it, love to hear it, and yet, it's hard to determine just what makes a voice considered "sexy" by the male masses. Is it a deeper tone? An element of huskiness like when we're afflicted with a cold? Or just something we can purposely implement by including more breath in our words than voice? Can we actually make a bedroom voice or do we have to be born with one?
Alas... the answer appeared in print right before my eyes. Little did I know that that lovely, almost unavoidable, monthly female cycle has something to contribute to my arsenal of lover-luring tools. You know, just in case I feel like using it. A study in Evolution & Human Behavior involved recording women's voices at four different periods throughout their menstrual cycles. A separate group of study participants were directed to listen to the various voices and rank their level of attractiveness on a 100-point scale. Lo and behold, the voice recordings that were ultimately ranked the highest in sexual appeal were all recorded during the time period closest to the women's ovulation. "Your bedroom voice is in full swing when you're at your most fertile," which means we naturally get a monthly opportunity to exercise our inner sex goddesses through our voices. I was going to start planning my erotic audio recordings around my period...
Of course, there's just one caveat... which I, unfortunately, didn't even read in the very last sentence of the little mag article until just this moment. Listeners participating in the study, weren't actually attracted to the voices of women on the Pill... no matter what time of the month it was in the voice-owners' cycles. Apparently, the hormonal changes affect the vocal results, and of course, the Pill switches up our natural hormonal cycles. Damnit.

We often mistakenly assume that confidence is all in our heads. It’s in our bodies too – in the way we move, stand, and speak. Our bodies speak our inner state. – James Chan |
