It's finally being confirmed: sexuality, is determined for us well before we're
ever born. It's not the result of personal choice or environmental influences
but of our genetic makeup. At least, that's what the latest science claims, and
the results have just been published in a new book by Dr. Glenn Wilson of the
Institute of Psychiatry and Dr. Qazi Rahman of the University of East London.
The book is called Born Gay: the Psychobiology of Sex Orientation. That's a very powerful statement in itself, even in the year 2005. Thus, the book is being generally welcomed by gay rights activists. The book largely "proves" that there's nothing unnatural about homosexuality, and it can't be "cured." According to the doctors, sexual orientation is decided by both genetic factors and hormonal activity in your mother's womb.
However, the book is still under heavy criticism for referring to men preferring to be labeled as bisexual as technically belonging to the "gay" category. Huh? I suppose that would be the same verdict for women considering themselves bisexual. Personally, I believe nothing in this world is ever strictly black and white.
There's been a great deal of research in the area of sexuality since the ground-breaking work of Simon LeVay and Dean Hamer in the early 90s. More about that research can be read here. That work is summarized for the first time in Born Gay with compelling evidence. The doctors/authors should be commended for literally and publicly stating that the popular habit of blaming factors such as parentage and tutelage for a child's "chosen" sexuality are completely unjust.
If you're interested, Born Gay is published by Peter Owen and can be purchased here and probably everywhere else very soon.
