It's often shunned, definitely socially taboo, and sometimes even feared. It can
be messy, but it can be done. Yet, so many of us don't or just prefer not to.
What's the real scoop on having sex on your period? Are there really any
concerns? The SexHerald staff wrote an excellent article on the subject: "Sex During Menstruation as a Taboo: More than Misogynistic Tendencies?" Never have I come across so much information about a sexual topic that I've always wondered about but never taken the time to actually research. In fact, I didn't even realize the depth of my own habit of shunning sex during my period until I was reading about others doing the same. Yeah, I've done it...a few times in fact. Still, when it's period time, I do feel a little unclean, even fresh out of the shower. And that can inhibit my usual welcoming of my partner's advances. Yet, I'm also oddly horny during that time, even more so than usual, and I'm ready to jump a man at the first sign of cramps. Especially if the man's just given me a gift of chocolate knowing full well that it soothes me during that monthly occasion like nothing else. I've laid down a towel in preparation for any "extra lubrication" during some good old cock and pussy action during menstruation. And I've still never witnessed any actual mess. Still, I did proudly stain my lover's mattress in New Zealand when I fell asleep after sex and forgot to reinsert a tampon. And I've seen a slightly reddened cock or two in my time at the moment of separation after some fantastic sex.
Still, I feel a little out of line even describing the experience of having a period to begin with. But why?? It's just a natural part of life, another normal bodily function. It's just a little blood. Big deal. I can talk about it, but most others don't and definitely not publicly. It's high time we get some real answers about the actual act of sex during a woman's period: the good, the bad, and any possible ugly. When it comes down to it, we all (as consenting adults) ought to be having a little more sex, whenever and however we wish. We've heard the history. We do know why sex during menstruation is taboo even today in the western world where cleanliness is the norm and even STDs are kept at a minimum. The Qur'an and Bible both state that menstruating women should never be touched by a man due to her impurity and uncleanliness. Men are still reluctant to do the same today, and women are a bit skeptical as well.
Thankfully, real research has been done to address our uncertainties. The fact is that, between two healthy adults, sex during menstruation poses no actual threat. It's just a little different. Disadvantages during that time would be that a woman's lubrication is changed during that period, and a little extra lubrication may be needed to keep things going smoothly. And besides the realization of sexually transmitted infections, be aware that others are transmitted through the blood as well. So, using protection during that time with a new or untested partner is a must. While there may not be any health benefits to having sex during that time, there are benefits. There are always benefits to having more sex. Orgasms may help alleviate some of the standard period symptoms; it all depends on the woman and her own experience. Yes, coming can help cramps, bloating, fatigue, and mood swings go away. So, grab a towel, maybe some baby wipes for easy clean up, and a condom if you and your partner don't test free of STIs.
