Making a Difference for Our Sexual Rights
Written by Tara Tainton

It's so easy to sit back and complain or wonder what the world would be like if we were all treated truly equally, given the freedom to exercise our freedoms or having the right to act on our rights. Worse yet, there are those times when we really want to stand up, say how we feel, voice what we believe in, and actually do something about the inequality in the world...but we don't know how we can actually help or what to do.

You believe in a woman's right to control her own body or in each individual's right to marry their loved one no matter which sex or gender either happen to be. You believe everyone should have the freedom to live, love, and fuck how, when, where, and with whom they want to as long as no harm to others is involved. Or maybe you don't. Either way, your opinion matters, and there's a grain of truth in each and every differing perspective that we can all learn from and develop the most beneficial policies, action, and influences from.

Whether you always wished you could step into the street boldly waving a huge sign proclaiming your beliefs and affecting passersby or you think it's a personal letter or even an anonymous check that makes the most difference or fits into your own lifestyle best, there is something you can do. And when you do, then you at least earn the right to complain a bit.

In my own ongoing effort to make my voice heard and do my own small yet significant part in making the world a safer, healthier, more accepting and satisfying place for all of us, I've learned of some organizations and groups that offer us the opportunity to make a difference. Take a peek and see what suits your own activist style and vision for a safer, sexier world.

sexual freedom coalition

How many of you were aware there exists a National Coalition for Sexual Freedom? I certainly didn't. I'm already beginning to feel like there's a better future in store for all of us.

Within the US, you can aid the fight to protect our very limited rights while encouraging the addition of new freedom we have yet to be granted. Outside the US, the NCSF serves as a resource and network for much needed support in the worldwide effort. The organization very directly answers just why we should care:

"Because your sexual expression:

  • Can result in discrimination, prosecution, and even violence against you
  • Can cause you to lose your children
  • Can cause you to lose your job or your income
  • Can lead you into a maze of antiquated laws and regulations you never even knew existed
  • Is arbitrarily criminalized by state and local authorities
  • Is used by the radical right to marginalize minority groups
  • Can result in the invasion of your privacy by the government, both within your own home or in educational, social and group environments"

The NCSF works to change antiquated laws, change the social climate about sexual issues, and promote the acceptance of safe, sane, and consensual alternative sexual practices among consenting adults. It opposes the censorship of consensual sexual expression and supports the right of adults to express their sexuality, gender identity, and orientation freely and openly without fear. Now, that's something we all need. Join, donate, or volunteer.

sexual freedom coalition

Based in the UK, the Sexual Freedom Coalition works to continually "challenge the Home Office, governments, police, and press for the sexual freedom of consensual adults." Check out the upcoming conference dates, the coalition's achievements, and online legal advice.

sexual freedom america

The homepage says it all: "Although we in America have many freedoms that others around the world can only dream about, we do not enjoy the same sexual rights. Prostitution, sensual massage, lap dances, nudism, and other personal sexual choices that are given their due respect in other countries are considered to be punishable crimes in many parts of the USA."

Check out the links with more info specific to prostitution, sensual massage, strip clubs, nudism, and pornography. Learn what you can do.

I volunteer to be a member in the Army of Love! Or, that group of people around the world, who are either Sex Workers of some sort, and/or people who enjoy all flavors of lovemaking in whatever gender, number, kink, or combination thereof, and/or people who actively work to uphold all of our sexual freedoms. Of course, I believe in only practicing sex in an atmosphere of love and respect, including love and respect of your own self. And in everybody taking responsibility not only for fertility control and not spreading or catching sexual diseases, but also communicating clearly and lovingly about your wants and needs. This not only applies to sex, but to life. I will do this regardless of whether I have funds, support, or society's approval. It's part of my role as a Lover of the Universe. And whether or not I have a tangible sexlife as such, I'll always be sexual and sexually interested!

Ah, the world would be a much better place if everyone shared your attitude, Linda. :) I'm right there with you, girl...we'll take on the world together! ;)

I feel that I have a personal responsibility as an artist to do whatever I can to allow myself and others like me to present free and expressive forms of art and entertainment to the world...and to my own country. If there's a group I can join to further this cause, I would love to become more involved. This very topic could be cause for concern by some schools of thought, and that alone is pretty disturbing. We shouldn't pick and choose our liberties. Freedom implies just that, not freedom with conditions. Thanks for giving me a site to direct my support and comraderie to, and for offering such fun and important information.
